Public Transportation

New!  Valley METRO Light Rail

Valley METRO Light Rail is a new public transportation service that will be operating in the greater Phoenix-area after December 26, 2008.  With stops convenient to the expo, finish and concert, and a stop within a mile of the race start, the light rail is an alternative mode of transportation for both local and out-of-town participants.  See details below on how to best utilize the Valley METRO Light Rail throughout race weekend.

METRO Light Rail Stations

There are 28 stations on the 20-mile METRO starter line. Stations have bench seats, shade structures to maximize shade at all times of day, and drinking fountains and emergency call boxes. Stations are fully accessible to people with disabilities, and station entrances and crosswalks are marked with textured warning strips.

The stop for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is 44th Street / Washington. Each station has fare vending machines which accept cash or credit card.  Visit the Valley Metro Website for a list of all the stops.

Park-and-Ride Locations ( view locations map )

There are eight park-and-ride locations offering a total of 3,513 parking spaces. METRO park-and-rides are free and are monitored by security cameras, security officers and municipal police officers. No overnight parking is allowed; cars left in lots after the end of the METRO service day will be ticketed or towed.

  • 19th Avenue/Montebello Avenue - 794 spaces
  • 19th Avenue/Camelback Road - 410 spaces
  • Central Avenue/Camelback Road - 135 spaces
  • 38th Street/Washington Street - 189 spaces
  • Dorsey Lane/Apache Boulevard - 190 spaces
  • McClintock Road/Apache Boulevard - 300 spaces
  • Price Freeway/Apache Boulevard - 693 spaces
  • Sycamore Street/Main Street - 802 spaces

Hours of Service

On weekdays, you can catch the first light rail train of the day at any station at 4:40 am, and the last train at 11 pm. On weekends and holidays, the service day begins at 5 am and the last full trip begins at 11 pm at all stations, arriving at the opposite end of the line at midnight. The trains operate 365 days a year.

Light Rail Frequency

Weekdays, light rail trains run every 10 minutes from 6 am to 7 pm.  All other hours, every 20 minutes.  On weekends and holidays, trains run every 15 minutes from 6 am to 7 pm. All other hours, every 20 minutes. During special events, like the marathon, trains may operate more frequently or for longer hours to accommodate additional crowds. Race Weekend Stops

See details below on how to best utilize the Valley METRO Light Rail throughout race weekend.  Download a Metro Light Rail Marathon map.

  • Light Rail at the Expo
    Stop 14- 3rd Street at Jefferson
    The Phoenix Convention Center is on the north side of Jefferson adjacent to Stop 14.
  • Light Rail near the Start Line
    Stop 13- Washington and Central Ave
    The Start area is approximately 1 mile west of Stop 13.
    After getting off the stop, follow Washington Street west for 1 mile (a great pre-race warm-up).
  • Light Rail near the Finish Line and Kid’s Race
    Stop 22- Veteran’s Way and College Avenue
    The Finish area is 1/2 mile east of Stop 22. After enjoying the Finish festivities, walk towards Wells Fargo Arena then west past Sun Devil Stadium to Stop 22.
  • Light Rail at the Headliner Concert
    Stop 21- Mill Avenue and 3rd Street
    The Headliner Concert is 200 yards North of Stop 21
    Head north on Mill Avenue and cross at Rio Salado Pkwy into Tempe Beach Park.
