Must-do Attractions in the Valley of the Sun

With more than 325 days of sunshine each year, it's no wonder Arizona is such an enjoyable place to visit. In addition to 200 area golf courses and world-renowned resorts and spas, you’ll find a wide variety of museums, cultural attractions, shopping and entertainment, and unlimited recreational areas that are sure to please. Camelback Mountain

Climb the city’s most famous landmark, the mountain resembling a crouching dromedary, for superb Valley views. Or visit the Echo Canyon recreation area, where sheer red cliffs and hiking paths attract outdoor enthusiasts.

One of the area’s best-known landmarks features a 1.2-mile trail to the peak’s summit. Some hike it for exercise, but most head up for the unbeatable Valley view.

More than 1,200 acres of rolling desert hills and rugged mountains feature a golf course, museums, picnic areas, fishing lagoons (urban fishing license required), hiking trails and the famous peek-through Hole-in-the-Rock landmark.

Visitors to Heritage and Science Park can stroll back into Phoenix’s Victorian past, watch a movie on a five-story screen or dine on pizza that a New York Times food critic deemed the best in the country. Occupying a picturesque city block in the heart of downtown, the park is home to locally owned shops and restaurants, as well as the Phoenix Museum of History and the Arizona Science Center. The latter houses more than 300 interactive exhibits, a planetarium and an IMAX theater.

GETTING TO AND FROM THE SCOTTSDALE ARTWALK: Transportation to P.F. Chang's Rock 'N" Roll Arizona Marathon ArtWalk from Scottsdale headquarter hotels will take place every half-hour the day of the event from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Transportation provided by Ollie the Trolley. The trolley pick-up location will be at Loloma Bus Station in downtown Scottsdale.

GETTING TO AND FROM THE EXPO: Transportation to the P.F. Chang's Rock 'N' Roll Arizona Health & Fitness Expo from the P.F. Chang's Rock 'N' Roll Arizona Marathon ArtWalk will be offered at the following times - pick up location will be on the Southeast corner of First Street and Marshall Way. Day 1

  • Visit Yuma Territorial Prison State Park.

Day 2

  • Golf in Parker – the Emerald Canyon Golf Course offers 18 holes of championship golf amid the canyons and mountains.
  • Take a drive along the river up the scenic “Parker Strip” to Parker Dam.
  • Spend the night in Lake Havasu City.

Day 3

  • Golf in Lake Havasu City – Check out the Havasu Island Golf Course at the Nautical Inn or the London Bridge Golf Club.
  • Rent a boat from the Sandpoint Marina to explore the lake.

North Central Arizona

Where to go…..

Day 1

  • Board the Verde Canyon Railway in Clarkdale for the 40-mile ride down and back up the Verde Valley.
  • Book one of the railroad’s wine or music-themed trips.
  • Head to nearby Tuzigoot National Monument, the home of Sinagua Indians from A.D. 1125 until 1425.

Day 2

  • Start in Cottonwood at the European-styled Old Town Café for some of the best almond croissants this side of the Atlantic.
  • Head to the Montezuma Castle National Monument and Montezuma Well
  • Spend the night wandering the steep streets of Jerome before tucking in at the allegedly haunted Surgeon’s House Hotel, a perfectly restored home listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Day 3

  • Hike on one of the hundreds of miles of trails in the 1.25-million-acre Prescott National Forest
  • Head to the Fossil Creek Llama Ranch in Strawberry and a night spent in a teepee.

Day 4

  • Take advantage of the llama ranch’s proximity to the Fossil Creek trailhead… as well as the ability and willingness of its animals to carry your supplies.
  • Guide a llama and hike through a ponderosa forest to one of only three natural travertine springs in the state.
  • Enjoy the views and as well as a gourmet lunch

 

Northern Arizona

Where to go…..

Day 1

  • Hop aboard the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams and enjoy bypassing all the auto traffic as you travel the 65 miles to the South Rim.
  • Return to Williams in the evening and stay at the recently renovated El Tovar Lodge, where the restaurant’s food can actually divert your attention from the incredible views for a few minutes.

Day 2

  • Upon your return to Williams, drive to Flagstaff, where the Museum of Northern Arizona and The Inn at 410 await.

Day 3

  • It’s less than 30 miles from Flagstaff to Sedona, but make sure to allot a few hours for the drive down Oak Creek Canyon, a swath of green in the desert landscape.
  • Check into the chic boutique Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spabefore getting a bird’s eye view – thanks to a hot air balloon ride – of the area’s red rocks, made famous in so many movies.

Day 4

  • Experience a 60 or 90-minute facial, massage, or body treatment at Sedona Rouge’s Spa. Each treatment at Sedona Rouge is custom-designed around your specific needs and skin type. For couples, there are dual treatments offered.

 

Southern Arizona

  • Dinner at the down-home Horseshoe Cafe.
  • Overnight at the Astronomers Inn.

Day 3

  • Stop at Stout’s Cider Mill in Willcox for refreshing, fresh-pressed apple cider.
  • Proceed 36 miles southeast to the Chiricahua National Monument, an unreal natural landscape of volcanic rock formations, soaring spires and hoodoos, sedimentary rock formations capped with harder rock.
  • Camp in the monument or check-in at nearby Sunglow Guest Ranch.

Day 4

  • Head to Bisbee, rich in mining history – $2 billion in copper, gold, lead, silver and zinc ores.
  • Board a mine car for an underground tour of the Queen Mine.
  • Lunch at Winchester’s in the historic Copper Queen Hotel. Shady Dell offers truly unique lodging in vintage aluminum travel trailers.
